Your first appointment with a Naturopath - what to expect

If you have never visited a Naturopath before you may be confused about what to expect.

Expect time

With an initial consultation lasting 70 minutes, your Naturopath is able to take the time to fully understand your health picture. During the first consultation, your Naturopath will ask many questions to identify the cause of your ill health.

Physical examinations will also be carried out including iridology, tongue, skin, pulse, BP and thyroid. Your Naturopath may recommend further lab testing if appropriate.

Expect to discover the cause of your ill health

Central to the philosophy of Naturopathic Medicine is the aim of treating the cause of ill-health and not just the symptoms. By treating the cause the patient is able to truly achieve wellness.

Expect evidence-based and traditional medicine

Naturopathic medicine combines traditional/natural medicine with scientific/evidence-based medicine to provide the very best health outcomes. Traditional medicine reflects thousands of years of beliefs and experiences in health. These traditions are multi-cultural and existed prior to modern medicine. Scientific/evidence-based medicine draws from modern scientific studies for treatment protocols involving nutrition, nutritional supplementation, herbal medicine and lifestyle interventions.

Expect a wholistic approach

Naturopathic treatment plans encompass all aspects of wellbeing including physical, mental and spiritual. Real wellness is achieved when all aspects of health are addressed and balanced.

Expect a collaborative approach

Naturopathic medicine is complementary to allopathic medicine and not alternative. A Naturopath will work alongside your other healthcare practitioners to provide the best care for you. Your Naturopath will ensure that your treatment is safe to combine with any existing medications. Its an exciting health model when health providers from varying fields are able to collaborate for patient care.
